At the TCA’s today, FOX again says talks about the future of The X-Files are “going on” and that those conversations are “complex.” FOX entertainment president David Madden says “we hope to be able to announce something shortly.” No word on what their definition of “shortly” is….

However FOX TV CEO Gary Newman was a little more subdued while talking with IndieWire, saying “My expectation is we will not have something next season” and that while there is “no negativity” scheduling is difficult and we may not see new episodes until Fall 2018 or Winter 2019. Newman’s words contrast a bit with what Madden said to Entertainment Weekly: “After Fox’s executive session, Madden told us he wanted to have an announcement ready for today’s event, but the deal-making wasn’t quite done.” Read more here.

Both Entertainment Weekly and IndieWire say that FOX is looking for more episodes than Season 10′s six, but less than a traditional 22-episode season.

So whether it’s “shortly” or two years from now, the “when” on Season 11 continues to be that elusive truth that is out there.
